Pedro Cardoso e Cunha earned his Master's in Bioengineering with a specialization in Biological Engineering from the Faculty of Engineering at the University of Porto in 2019. After two years as a Research Fellow at Allmicroalgae - Natural Products, in Leiria, he started the doctoral program of Marine, Earth, and Environmental Sciences (specialization in Biological Sciences) at the University of Algarve in 2022.
Pedro is now preparing to reach an important milestone in his academic journey with the defence of his PhD thesis, entitled:
Upgrading Nannochloropsis oceanica production – from cultivation to multi-product biorefinery
His work focused on reducing microalgae cultivation costs and increasing the market value of microalgal biomass with the overall objective of contributing to a more economically viable microalgal industry. More specifically, Pedro evaluated the feasibility of reusing the same culture medium during consecutive cultivation cycles and developed a multi-product biorefinery for Nannochloropsis oceanica, the marine microalgae used during his PhD research.
