Our leaders

The team that leads CCMAR shapes our strategic vision, oversees our strategy and all facets of our environment, takes advantage of our affiliation with the University of the Algarve and allocates resources to fulfil our mission in research and education.

President

Adelino Canário, Ph.D., is the Director of the Centre for Marine Sciences (CCMAR) and a Professor at the University of the Algarve. He was one of the first founding members of CCMAR in 1993 and has been its president in recent years.

Professor Canário also holds other leadership positions, such as president of CIMAR-LA and GreenColab, leader of the Comparative Endocrinology and Integrative Biology group and representative in Portugal of the European Marine Biological Resources Centre.

Direction

The Board of Directors is made up of a group of CCMAR members who advise and supervise scientific and technical endeavours, oversee and define policies for scientific and technical activities and manage day-to-day operations.

Advice to the Board

CCMAR is constantly looking for ways to improve and, in that sense, these tips aim to provide valuable advice on our scientific activities, which is essential for our growth.

CCMAR's Scientific Board is made up of doctoral members who give their opinion to the Board of Directors on the annual plans and other matters raised by the Board of Directors.

Diversity, equity and inclusion

CCMAR is a research center committed to promoting diversity, equity and inclusion (DEI), creating a safe, respectful and inclusive environment for all. To this end, it has a volunteer work group that develops activities and strategies focused on these values.

The center has implemented an Equal Opportunities Plan and is developing its DEI Plan, which includes actions such as the collection of gender-disaggregated data and training on DEI issues for the whole community.
