On Thursday, the 25th of June, CCMAR Seminar will feature Nils Krueck, Principal Investigator at the Institute for Marine and Antarctic Studies (IMAS), University of Tasmania, Australia.
In this session titled “Designing Marine Protected Areas for Real-World Impact”, Nils Krueck will explore how systematic design of marine protected areas (MPAs) can help balance ecological, social, and fisheries management objectives. The seminar will address key decisions such as total MPA coverage, spatial placement, and reserve size, and how these influence both ecosystem recovery and fisheries sustainability.
Drawing on multiple case studies, primarily from Indonesia, the talk will examine the implications of fully protected MPA coverage policies, the role of larval dispersal in guiding MPA placement, and recent advances in understanding reef fish movement to support more effective design of MPA networks.
By integrating fish population dynamics, small-scale fisheries research, and spatial management tools, this seminar will highlight how science-based planning can improve the real-world impact of marine conservation strategies.
About the Speaker
Nils Krueck is a Senior Researcher at IMAS, University of Tasmania, working on fish population dynamics, marine protected areas, and small-scale fisheries. His research focuses on understanding how MPAs affect both ecosystems and coastal communities, with extensive experience in MPA planning and fisheries management across Australia, Southeast Asia, and beyond. He has over a decade of experience in spatial fisheries science and has contributed to multiple international projects aimed at improving fisheries sustainability under data-limited conditions.
