Tawani joins us again. She was here in the 2024/2025 season, closely following the work of our microscopy platform and some of our research groups through the Erasmus Mundus IMBRSea programme, and will now work under the supervision of our researchers Teresa Correia and Aschwin Engelen. Welcome, Tawani!
1. Tell us a bit about the work you are/will be doing at CCMAR.
I am working on my master’s thesis, where I will assist in developing microscopy-based methods to study the shape and internal organisation of Caulerpa, a unique single-celled green macroalga. Funded by the Erasmus Mundus and ISblue programmes, this work aims to improve our understanding of its cellular structure and organelle distribution, contributing to ongoing research at CCMAR.
2. What were you doing before you joined us?
Before joining CCMAR, I completed the taught semesters of my Erasmus Mundus IMBRSea master’s degree in Marine Biology and Ecology. My studies took me to Ghent University (Belgium), the University of Marche (Italy), and UBO/IUEM (France), and later to the University of Algarve (Faro), where I gained experience in marine biology, applied and quantitative marine ecology, microscopy, and science communication.
3. What do you enjoy doing outside of work?
Outside of work, I enjoy spending time in nature through hiking, snorkeling or freediving, and exploring a variety of natural environments. I usually bring my camera along to practice nature photography. When I’m not outdoors, I enjoy relaxing indoors with a good novel.
