Meet Axelle de Boeck, our intern student in the BIOSKEL group.
Tell us a bit about the work you’ll be doing at CCMAR
I’m currently in my first year of the IMBRSea program, and I’m completing my internship at CCMAR. Here, I will contribute to research on how rising ocean temperatures affect the embryonic development of the small-spotted catshark (Scyliorhinus canicula). Over the next six weeks, you’ll mostly find me in the lab, exploring shark behavior and observing their embryos.
What do you enjoy doing outside of work?
I enjoy staying active outside of work, whether it’s going for a run or a Pilates session. Several years ago, I discovered surfing, and since then I’ve tried to spend as much time in the ocean as possible. This has led me to work at a surf camp in France during the summer, with this year marking my seventh season. I also enjoy balancing my weeks with more creative and quiet moments, like painting, spending time cooking and trying out new recipes, or unwinding with music and a good book.
What were you doing before you joined us?
I gained some experience as a wildlife vet nurse in Costa Rica and Laos, working in clinics and sanctuaries. I cared for a wide range of species from sloths and parrots to endangered Siamese crocodiles, but my favorite was working with squirrel monkeys. I also worked as a teacher at an agricultural high school, combining my background in animal care and education. Now, I’m very happy to continue my academic journey, this time exploring the wonderful field of marine biology!
