Environmental bioremediation
Environmental bioremediation (pharmaceuticals, microplastics and recovery of metals from wastes): development of an optimized protocols to analyze microplastics from different matrixes (air, seawater, sediment, soil) and identified bacteria from marine samples capable to biodegrade polyethylene and polyethylene terephthalate microplastics and several emerging pharmaceuticals such as paracetamol, fluoxetine and 17α-ethinylestradiol, thus with potential to integrate remediation processes. Additionally, an important achievements was the technological development of a process to recovery of copper and zinc from an extreme acid mine drainage by combining chemical and biological strategies. This research allowed: (a) optimization of a solvent extraction method to obtain copper solutions suitable for to recover the production of metallic copper by the electrowinning, or for the production of functional covellite nanoparticles by addition of biogenic sulfide, at laboratory and pilot scales (b) development of a subsequent process to be applied to the resulting raffinate, allowing the recovery of zinc as sulfide nanoparticles without iron contamination.
