The ‘Marine Forests Festival’ returns to Sagres from 21 to 28 May, occupying Baleeira Harbour with a programme that combines science, conservation and education to showcase the richness of underwater coastal habitats. Over the course of eight days, researchers, students and the general public will be able to take part in lectures, guided dolphin and seaweed watching, themed workshops, scuba diving baptisms and visit a craft and local food fair.
The initiative, promoted by the University of the Algarve in collaboration with the Centre for Marine Sciences (CCMAR) and part of the FOSTEAM@SOUTH and PRR Impulsos Jovem e Adulto projects, aims to raise awareness among the community of the ecological importance of marine forests-namely the algae and corals of Sagres-and their role in fixing CO₂ and balancing coastal ecosystems. According to Alexandra Teodósio, UAlg's vice-rector for Internationalisation and Sustainable Development, this is a unique opportunity for students to immerse themselves ‘literally’ in this ecosystem, applying teaching methodologies based on problem-solving in a real context.
Alongside the field activities and scientific meetings, the highlight is the ‘OceanArt: Science to Art’ exhibition, made up of more than thirty works - including photography, painting and sculpture - developed by thirteen scientists and artists. The exhibition opens at Forte do Beliche on 17 May at 5pm and will run until 15 June, inviting the public to reflect on the current challenges facing the ocean and the importance of protecting it.
The event also has the support of the Sagres Parish Council, Docapesca, Casco Antiguo, Iberagar and biodiversa+, and some of the workshops and dives require prior registration. See the full programme for details of timetables and registration.
