Melina Silva has been developing her research at CCMAR as a PhD student in Biological Sciences at the University of Algarve, following her academic training in Biotechnology (BSc and MSc). She is now approaching the final milestone of her PhD.

Thesis Title: Dominance pheromones in the Siamese fighting fish (Betta splendens)

Throughout her academic journey, Melina’s work has evolved from molecular biology and bioinformatics into the study of animal behaviour and chemical communication. Her PhD focuses on understanding how chemical signals regulate aggression in fish, combining approaches from behaviour, electrophysiology, histology, and analytical chemistry.

Her research contributes to uncovering the biological mechanisms underlying social interactions in fish, with important implications for animal welfare, particularly in aquaculture systems.

As she reaches this important milestone, we invite the CCMAR community to come together and support Melina in this significant moment of her scientific career.
