Adela Belackova holds a Master's degree in International Economic Relations from the Prague University of Economics (2010) and a Bachelor's in Engineering Ecology from the Czech University of Life Sciences (2015), where she studied marine turtle breeding success. Drawn to marine conservation, she moved to Portugal to pursue a Master's in Marine Biology at the University of Algarve, graduating in 2019 with a thesis evaluating the reserve effect in the Sagres Marine Protected Area (PNSACV). In 2021, she joined CCMAR as a PhD student in the Fisheries, Biodiversity and Conservation group, where she now prepares to defend her doctoral thesis, entitled:

Turning marine protected areas more efficient by adjusting their zonation and fishing practices.

Adela Belackova’s doctoral research explores the interactions between Marine Protected Areas (MPAs) and fisheries. Her work focuses on monitoring the effects of MPAs on small-scale fisheries using fishery landings data and fishers’ perceptions; identifying fish spawning aggregation sites as potential areas for spatial conservation based on fisheries data; and assessing existing MPA designs and projecting new zoning scenarios through the analysis of spatial mapping data.

Let’s support Ana at this important moment in her scientific career!
