Main info

Novel microdiets for the early developmental stages of European lobster and purple sea urchin – Blue Biotechnology

Coordinated by SPAROS Lda (www.sparos.pt), a Portuguese SME devoted to innovate in the development of new products and processes for fish feeding and nutrition, project ShellWIN is hereby proposed in partnership with two other entities:

1) the Aquaculture Research Group from Centre for Marine Sciences of the Algarve (CCMAR; https://www.ccmar.ualg.pt/en/group/aquaculture-research-group);

2) RIASEARCH (SME; Ovar, Portugal).

Project ShellWIN aims at the following goals:

  1. Develop a high-performance microdiet able to sustain growth and development during the early developmental stages of the European lobster, from post-larvae onwards.
  2. Develop high-performance microdiets for the early stages of the purple sea urchin, able to sustain growth and survival during the larval and post-larval stages.

By aiming at developing novel microdiets for the early developmental stages of European lobster and purple sea urchin, Project ShellWIN aims at increasing the rearing potential of these novel species for aquaculture both in Northern-European countries and Portugal. Both European lobster and purple sea urchin are premium-valued and highly appreciated species by the consumer and an optimisation of their farming practices will contribute to a higher availability in the market.
