Project Activities

Aim:

SEPIAWELL is a Fundação para a Ciência e a Tecnologia funded research project focused on studying the stress-responsiveness of anaesthesia and euthanasia agents through refined animal welfare methodologies (based on the 3R’s principle) in the European cuttlefish, Sepia officinalis (Linnaeus, 1758). In addition, it aims to perform this assessment by developing and using a prototype welfare platform to correctly assess the effect of stress in this and other aquacultured species, in a humane way. Results from this project will expectably provide a new mean of assessing animal welfare in marine animals; and determine the best anaesthesia and euthanasia agents for S. officinalis based on new/innovative data.
