Within the project - SAL+

Project Refº: PD25-00024

Ref. ª: CCMAR/BINCGAM/15/2026

The Centro de Ciências do Mar do Algarve (CCMAR) opens one (01) Research Fellowship for a person with a Master Degree (Bolsa de Investigação não conducente à obtenção de grau académico para mestre) eligible for candidates of any nationality, including stateless persons and beneficiaries of political refugee status, in the scientific fields of Biochemistry, Biotechnology, Molecular Biology and Microbiology, within the scope of the research project with reference No. PD25-00024, entitled SAL+: “Biotechnology applied to the valorisation of traditional salt production (SAL+)”, funded by Fundación Bancaria Caixa d’Estalvis i Pensions de Barcelona through the Promove programme, under the following conditions:

1. Host and Contracting Institution: CCMAR
This fellowship is intended for master’s degree holders that are enrolled in a non-academic degree course, integrated in the educational project of a higher education institution, and developed in association or cooperation with one or more R&D units at the starting date of the fellowship, with the costs associated with the course being covered by the project.

2. Work Plan, Tasks and Objectives:
The fellow will follow out the following tasks in the context of SAL+ will be developed in Castro Marim, Algarve a NUTSIII region. The hired fellow will develop activities in the context of the planned third action that aims to deliver its impact in the medium/long-term.  Biotechnology will be used to explore the planktonic and benthic biological systems with a key role in sea salt production and quality and to identify resilience measures in the face of climate change. Furthermore, microorganismos from salt pans will be isolated to add value to endogenous natural resources. The project will be developed through a collaboration between CCMAR and the Association of salt producers in Castro Marim.

The work the fellow will carry out includes:

1. Building resilience in sea salt production by characterising the biological systems of the Salinas:
The biological system in the Salinas, which is composed mainly of microscopic organisms in the water (plankton) and on the pond floor (benthic) is important for salt production and will be characterised using advanced molecular approaches (e.g., 16/18 S ribosomal RNA sequencing, e-DNA approaches, transcriptomics). Samples will be collected from the main production units, of seven producers taking sufficient samples for statistical robustness.

Objectives:
1. Identify the biological system using microbiology, molecular and biochemical approaches in the Salinas of Castro Marim.
2. Conduct a comparative analysis of the microbiological diversity, molecular diversity and physiological characteristics in the Salinas of Castro Marim from a Biotechnology perspective.
3. Use the results of molecular analysis and biochemical analysis to identify candidates of potential biotechnology interest.
4. Advance towards pilot activities for selected, promising microorganisms.

Outputs:
1. Library of microbial isolates (bacteria and fungi) both halophiles and halotolerant microorganisms.
2. A screening platform for moderate throughput analysis of the Biotechnology of isolated microorganisms.
3. Screening of up to 200 microorganisms with molecular identification (e.g., 16S rRNA) identification and phenotype characterisation.
4. Up to 50 candidate microorganisms and ranking for future development.
5. A genome collection for the Castro Marim microbial ecosystem.

Knowledge about the microorganisms in Castro Marim is important for adding value to these important salt production ecosystems. The biotechnology potential will the first step towards creating alternative added value products that can valorise the unique Salt production heritage of Castro Marim and support their role in valorising salt production and the unique ecosystem of the Natural park.

2. Biotechnological valorisation of halophytes of the Castro Marim Salinas:
The conditions in Salinas are challenging for biological organisms due to the dual challenge of salinity and temperature. Halophytes have acquired a variety of adaptive strategies to survive hypersalinity including the evolution of unique enzymes and other proteins that may have a diversity of biotechnological applications. The present activity will establish the regulatory steps and acquire the licenses required to collect and exploit microorganisms for potential commercial gain from the Salinas. The halophytes will be isolated and identified (16S rRNA sequencing) from Salinas of Castro Marim, and a resource created composed of the isolated strains and their sequenced and annotated genomes. Preliminary exploration of the biotechnological potential of the halophytes will be from an enzyme-based perspective.

Objectives:
1. Characterize the diversity of halophytes and establish a biobank and database with information about isolated and sequenced strains.
2. Conduct genome sequencing of up to 50 halophytes and conduct bioinformatics and function screens to catalogue biotechnologically interesting enzymes and other molecules.

Outputs:
1. Identification of the genetic diversity of isolated halophytes.
2. A biobank of isolated halophytes and a database with relevant details about the strains.
3. The sequenced and annotated genomes of up to 50 halophytes and halotolerant microorganisms and assessment of their biotechnological potential based on bioinformatics and their functional phenotypes.
4. Scientific publications and presentation of results at relevant conferences.

Other responsibilities of the research fellow:
The fellow will be involved in the day-to-day running of the CCMAR laboratories assisting in their good functioning through contributing to communal activities such as ordering of materials, storage and maintenance of stores, outreach activity and other activities that may be required in the context of CCMAR. Preparation of reports, abstracts, posters and manuscripts will also be one of the general tasks expected. The fellow will abide by the rules and recommendations established by CCMAR for security and harmony in the workplace.
