J. Varela has participated in 30 competitively funded scientific projects, 3 as project PI (Vertical Algas, SP1c; ALGAVALOR, SP5; OVERCAROTEN), 13 as institutional PI (e.g., PERFORMALGAE, ALGAESOLUTIONS, ALLARVAE, ALGACYCLE, ALGARED, among others), 13 as team member (e.g., REALM, ALGAE4IBD, ZEBRABLOOM, PROFUTURE, GREENTREAT, among others) and 1 as supervisor of a Marie Curie project grant for experienced scientists (SEAWEED AD). J. Varela also established two research contracts for the isolation and deployment of novel microalgae with traits as desired by entrepreneurial partners (ALGACO2 and contract research for identification of novel and current microalgal strains down to the species level). He has also participated in several COST actions namely EUCAROTEN. He has been the supervisor of 5 post-docs and 23 PhD students, many of them in partnership with companies such as Allmicroalgae and Necton and the collaborative laboratory GreenColab. The underlying goal is always to acquire scientific knowledge in the broad field of marine biotechnology to better understand how microalgae respond to abiotic stress and how they can be used for nutrient recycling. In addition, he has carried out the development of novel and improved strains for food, feed and pharmaceutical applications via bioprospection, strain improvement and isolation of marine bioactive compounds. More recently, microbiomes associated with microalgae have been studied as part of PhD and MSc theses. Almost all students who have received their PhD degree have jobs in their scientific / technological field as, for example, Sacha Coesel (U. Washington, USA), Hugo Pereira (Executive Director of the GreenColab collaborative laboratory), Mariana Carneiro (Necton), Catarina Vizetto-Duarte (NTU Singapore), Lisa Schüler and Alexandra Ramos (GreenColab).
