The Open Science Tools Series brings together conceptual insights and practical training on digital tools that are shaping the future of Open Science. This seminar focuses on Data Management Planning (DMP) as a core component of responsible and transparent research practices, combining theoretical perspectives with hands-on demonstrations.
Following the seminar, participants will have the opportunity to attend a practical demonstration at CCMAR, where they will receive guidance on using ARGOS, an open service for creating and managing Data Management Plans aligned with Open Science and FAIR principles.

Talks and Speakers
Maria Paola Tomasino - An introduction to the data management plan (DMP) in the context of research data management in Open Science.
Short bio
Maria coordinates the Open Science and Data Management Office at CIIMAR, where she supports researchers in Research Data Management (RDM) and Open Science by providing training and guidelines. As Data Steward for CIIMAR WATCH – Monitoring Platform, she ensures the interoperability of marine data and metadata while advancing the adoption of FAIR and Open Science principles.
Abstract
Data Management Planning (DMP) is a fundamental aspect of modern research practice. This introduction discusses why DMPs are important in the open science framework, how they support best practices in research data management, and their significance in promoting FAIR principles and data interoperability. This presentation will establish the essential conceptual framework for understanding the practical applications of ARGOS and machine-actionable DMPs that are covered later in the session.
Maria Kontopidi - An Introduction to ARGOS for Data Management Planning.
Short bio
Maria is a geographer with a Master’s degree in Human Geography, Development and Spatial Planning. At the “Athena” Research Center, she works on Open Science projects such as OSTrails and EOSC Gravity. She supports the ARGOS Data Management Planning service and the OpenAIRE NOAD in Greece, focusing on Open Science communication, training, and community engagement, as well as contributing to ARGOS testing and quality assurance.
Abstract
This presentation will introduce ARGOS, an open service that helps researchers create, manage and share Data Management Plans (DMPs) in line with Open Science practices.
Through a live demo, we will explore how ARGOS enables researchers to describe and manage different types of research outputs, such as datasets, software and ethical aspects, within a single Plan, facilitates collaboration among project members and across departments within their organisations, and supports automated content writing, publishing and searching.
By simplifying the creation and management of DMPs, ARGOS helps researchers focus on the quality and impact of their work while ensuring transparency, reusability and compliance with Open Science and FAIR principles.
Filipa Pereira - Providing a Data Management Plan System to the Portuguese Scientific Community.
Short Bio
Filipa is a research data service manager at FCCN – Digital Services of FCT, supporting the scientific community and promoting Open Science and FAIR data. She has a degree in Economics from the Portuguese Catholic University. She also has a master's degree in Pharmaceutical Biomedicine from the University of Aveiro. She worked for several years in the field of life sciences, with a focus on R&D, namely in clinical trials monitoring. She is interested in Open Science, research data management, academic publishing, and public policies.
Abstract
FCT has been actively participating in the implementation of actions and measures aimed at the transition to research practices based on Open Science principles. In the context of research data management, FCT, through its Digital Services Unit FCCN, provides the scientific and higher education community with a Data Management Plan System. The main objective of this session is to provide an overview on the work done in the tool and template selection, ensuring the support to elaborate and update Data Management Plans, following best practices and complying with the “Policy on the management and sharing of data resulting from research funded by FCT”.
