Gorgonian sculpture with corals rescued from bycatch

EDP Art Reef

Project Summary

The EDP Art Reef project created the first underwater exhibition in Portugal. The 13 pieces in this intervention were created by VHILS (Alexandre Farto) who transformed materials resulting from the dismantling of EDP's coal plants into works of art, thus creating an artificial reef that will be colonized by fauna and flora over time. The sculpture park is located in Albufeira one mile from the coast and around 12 meters depth.

Our team collaborated with the EDP Art Reef project, promoting the assisted biological colonisation of some sculptures with corals rescued from accidental captures by local bottom fishing. This intervention aimed to rescue and transplant a total of 200 corals (gorgonians) of different species that occur naturally and are fished by local fishermen in 5 of the 13 sculptures. During the creative process of these 5 sculptures, the VHILS team was inspired by the branching morphology of the local gorgonian species. The collaboration with local fishermen to rescue corals accidentally captured is an essential component of our work.

At the end of July 2023, we transplanted 45 corals into two sculptures that we have been monitoring. During May of 2025, we rescued and transplant an additional 140 corals.
