Gillnets and trammel nets (set nets) fisheries are of great importance in Portugal, from an economic and social point of view, being primarily operated by the coastal and small-scale fleets and catching a large variety of species, thus supporting many coastal fishing communities. However, in recent years concern has been growing over the environmental impacts of the nets as well as the increase in invasive algae blooms that render set nets useless and take hours to clean at port. Additionally set nets have contributed to the spread of various algae including the invasive brown algae, Rugulopteryx Okamurae, through traditional fishing operations, that overtake the native flora. In the southern region of Portugal there is a growing concern as the species has been spotted in more areas and appears to have a fast spreading rate, which impacts the local biodiversity. The project Intuitive Cleaning of Set Nets: Invasive Algae Control (IntuiClean) aims to create an onboard set net cleaning to reduce the spread of the invasive algae species and reduce the labor-intensive cleaning at port by local fishers. IntuiClean will focus on workshops to co-design the device with the local fishing community.
