António V. Sykes graduated in Marine Biology and Fisheries (Universidade do Algarve) in 26/03/1999, completed an MSc in Marine Science – Marine Resources, specialty in Aquaculture (Universidade do Porto) in 07/04/2003, and concluded its PhD in Aquaculture, specialty in Nutrition (Universidade do Algarve) in 23/11/2007. Currently, he is an IF Researcher at CCMAR. He has focused his research on the development of cephalopod culture, using both the European cuttlefish Sepia officinalis and the common octopus Octopus vulgaris as models. He also participated in the EU COST Action FA1301 - CephsInAction, as part of the management committee and as leader of Working Group 1.
António has published more than 50 papers in international peer review journals and authored of 5 book chapters in “Cephalopod Culture” and another in the Handbook of Pathogens and Diseases in European Cephalopods. He has more than 100 communications in congress.
António has mentored 2 PhD, 10 MSc, and 5 BSc theses. He was a PI of 4 projects, totalling nearly 600k€ of funding for his research from 2010-2015, and participated in 7 other projects as researcher.
António is member of the Editorial Advisory Board of the journal Aquaculture Reports, Associate Editor of Frontiers in Marine Science - Marine Fisheries, Aquaculture and Living Resources and acts as referee for more than 30 peer review journals. In addition, he is member of CCMar-CBMR ORBEA Animal Welfare Committee, of the Portuguese Society for Laboratory Animals (SPCAL). He is the Convenor of the Working Group on Capture and Transport of Cephalopods for FELASA. He also lectures Handling and Basic Techniques in Aquatic Organisms (Cephalopods), ARRIVE Guidelines and Animal Experimentation Legislation at CAL-AQUA and in other advanced training courses. In addition, he is a EU COST External Expert.
