Resources, Restoration, Connectivity and Climate

Short Title
R2C2
Descrição

R2C2 studies the impacts of habitat loss and fragmentation as threats to biodiversity enhanced by climate change and bridging the gap between genetics and sustainable fisheries management with studies of population genetic structure or stock delineation of commercially and/or recreationally important fisheries.

Sobre

Resources, Restoration, Connectivity and Climate (R2C2) is a research group of the Centre for Marine Sciences and the University of Algarve. The R2C2 group emerges from the Fisheries Biology and Hydroecology research group, which dates back to the primordia of the Center of Marine Sciences.

R2C2 is a dedicated group of scientists and students with research and training spanning the fields of biology, ecology, evolution, and conservation of marine organisms. The acquired expertise in population genetics and genomics adds to the retained competence in the biological basis for the management of living resources, the impacts of climate change and human-based activities on biodiversity and the biological basis for the artificial rearing of Cephalopod and Syngnathid species.

Our aim is to study the impacts of habitat loss and fragmentation as threats to biodiversity enhanced by climate change and bridging the gap between genetics and sustainable fisheries management with studies of population genetic structure or stock delineation of commercially and/or recreationally important fisheries.

The group is involved in the assessment of habitat loss and fragmentation as threats to biodiversity, taking into consideration how climate change might amplify these effects and also bridging the gap between genetics and sustainable fisheries management with studies of population genetic structure or stock delineation of commercially and/or recreationally important fisheries. The group is also developing a number of research programs focused on the impacts of global change on diversity below the species level as well on understanding how small-scale local interactions among distinct components of ecosystems influence the effects of such change.

The R2C2 group maintains a high level of targeted research, extension and outreach; undergraduate, graduate teaching and mentoring while interacting with regional, national and international institutions, and non-governmental organizations.
