CCMAR project brings science to schools

“Cientificamente provável” is an outreach project that takes science into schools. This is the second year that the project is running with such a success that we can't accept much more applications.

The outreach programmes have always been considered by the CCMAR as a priority. In recent years, the “Cientificamente provável” project turned it possible to broaden a range of activities and promote our research in a more coordinated way into schools.

The project, promoted by the Secretary of State for Education, through the network of libraries of the schools and the Secretary of State for Science, Technology and Higher Education, started in the academic year 2018/2019 with 500 lectures given in schools of the Algarve region, involving elementary and secondary school students.

In the current academic year, our team of ten researchers has already carried out activities for 380 students and by the end of the year, we will be able to involve 200 more students.

The activities taken to schools are not only lectures, says João Cardoso, one of the researchers involved and also responsible for the action, “we make a demonstration, something more practical, but that also helps students to better understand the contents, which often are related with our activities ”.

The objective is now to maintain the activities after the end of the project, not least because there are too many appointments.
