New on Board: Lucía Benavente

Tell us a bit about the work you are/will be doing at CCMAR.
I will work in the Marbiotech department with Prof. Luísa Paula Barreira as my tutor.  The traineeship involves experiments at a pilot installation of novel microalgal photobioreactors in a wastewater treatment plant in the Algarve for the evaluation of different operational parameters (e.g., hydraulic and biomass retention time) in the efficiency of nutrients removal. I will also assess the biochemical composition of the microalgal biomass produced for the establishment of valorisation scenarios.

What were you doing before you joined us?
I am a graduate in biotechnology from the University of Cádiz.  I also did internships in two biomedical laboratories in Cádiz (Spain) and in Bergen (Norway). But I realised that I would like to focus my professional life on environmental research. For this reason, I am currently studying for a Master in Biotechnology of Environment and Health. I am also doing practices in the department of microbiology, where we are working on the decontamination of soil and water through bacteria

What do you enjoy doing outside of work?
I love travelling, getting to know new places and their cultures. It's something that gives me life. I also love exploring nature and trying new risky and adventurous sports. I am a person who likes to test new things, but, at the same time, I really enjoy the more daily things and the time I spend with the people who matter to me.
