Fish Welfare Course

Segunda, 11 Novembro, 2019 a Quarta, 13 Novembro, 2019

Descrição do Curso

Fair-fish international, CCMAR and the Fish Ethology and Welfare Group are proud to present the first edition of our Fish Welfare Course. We carefully selected top international experts in their fields to teach each module, which were specifically designed to have a practical approach. This intensive 3-day training program aims to provide a complete theoretical and practical knowledge base to:

  • understand the biology of fish welfare
  • design welfare programs in captive and wild caught fish
  • correctly assess the welfare state of fish
  • appropriately use technical solutions to improve the welfare of fish.

Formato

The welfare of fish is an essential topic that is gaining momentum in aquaculture, fisheries and academia. The correct assessment of the welfare state of fish and the promotion of best practices that ensure good welfare must rely on a) solid scientific knowledge of the biology of fish and b) appropriate design and use of technical solutions. Fish welfare has largely progressed in recent years both in research and industry, and all stakeholders should be able to benefit from these advancements. The dialogue between researchers, industry and consumers ultimately benefits all parties involved: fish live better lives, scientists have better research models, industry has better fish with higher market value and consumers eat a better product. Knowledge is therefore key for better welfare of fish.

Pré-requisitos

Participants are expected to have at least some background in fish science, aquaculture, fisheries or related disciplines.

Agenda
Audiência
The course is directed to: - Biologists, veterinarians and technicians working in fish farms of fisheries, - Operation directors in aquaculture or fisheries - Quality managers in aquaculture or fisheries - Scientists, researchers and MSc or PhD students in the field of aquaculture, fisheries, fish biology, ethology or physiology members of NGOs and associations promoting fish welfare - Members of the general public with interest in fish welfare and a background in fish science.

Instrutores

Prof. Lynne Sneddon

University of Liverpool, UK
Director of Bioveterinary Sciences at the University of Liverpool. Lynne’s research addresses mechanistic and functional questions in animal welfare using aquatic models particularly addressing pain, fear and stress. Current research topics include exploring pain assessment and analgesia in laboratory fish and use of young non-protected larval fish to replace adults. Lynne is Chair of the Animal Section within the Society for Experimental Biology, sits on the NC3Rs Research Grant Panel and is ethics editor for the journal Behavioral Ecology.

Prof. Michail Pavlidis

University of Crete, GR
Michail Pavlidis, Biologist, PhD, is a Professor of “Biology and Physiology of Marine Organisms” and Head of the Department of Biology, at the University of Crete Greece. He was also Docent Professor in “Aquaculture-Biotechnology of Broodstock Management” at the University of Eastern Finland, Kuopio, Finland. He has more than 25 years of expertise in fish physiology-endocrinology. His current research is focusing on the molecular, neuro-endocrine and husbandry interactions involved in the regulation of the stress response, on the development of non-invasive reliable welfare indicators, and on...

Prof. Leonor Galhardo

ISPA-IU, PT
Leonor Galhardo has a PhD in Animal Science (University of Oporto), in the scope of which she developed research on fish psychological stress and welfare assessment. She has also a master’s degree in Applied Animal Behaviour and Animal Welfare (Edinburgh University). She developed her professional activities working for the veterinary authorities and international NGOs mainly in the scope of wild animal welfare topics. However, her focus has always been education, for which she developed a post-graduate course on animal welfare (ISPA-IU) and lectured in numerous animal welfare-related courses...

Dr. Pablo Arechavala-Lopez

CCMAR
Pablo Arechavala-Lopez is a marine biologist with a multidisciplinary scientific production. Background on fish ecology and ethology, he has studied the behaviour of fish escaped from farms and their possible effects on the marine environment with a view to improving the sustainable aquaculture management. Today, as part of the Fish Ethology and Welfare Group at CCMAR and FishEthoGroup Association, he is focused on developing diverse strategies to ensure a more responsible aquaculture activity, such as investigating behavioural indicators of fish welfare, rising welfare management plans at...

Dr. Kilian Toledo-Guedes

University of Alicante, ES
Kilian holds a Juan de la Cierva researcher position at the Department of Marine Sciences and Applied Biology at the University of Alicante. Since 2006, his research has been focused on several aspects of the environmental interactions and sustainability of marine finfish aquaculture in both the Atlantic and Mediterranean (e.g. escaped fish, salmon sea lice, aquaculture-fisheries interactions, site selection, carrying capacity). He lectured a Master’s Degrees in Sustainable Fisheries Management and Analysis and Management of Mediterranean Ecosystems. This allowed him to develop an ecosystemic...

Dr. João Correia

Flying sharks, PT
João Correia presents a path as remarkable as his ambition and entrepreneurial spirit. A native of Cartaxo, he developed a special love for the sea early on, especially for sharks. He began his career at the Lisbon Zoo, where he was responsible for two sharks, and later was a deep-shark researcher at the Portuguese Institute for Maritime Research. He then became responsible for the acquisition of all animals from the Lisbon Oceanarium, including their capture, during the pre-opening phase and following eight years. In addition to being a professor of higher education at the Higher School of...
